Terms, privacy & disclaimers

The agreement between you and Anchor.

Version 1 · Last updated June 1, 2026

This is the same document you accept inside the app, reproduced here so you can read it before installing. Please read it in full before using Anchor.

1. What Anchor is — and isn’t

Anchor is a personal focus and reflection tool. It helps you check in with your day, notice repeating distractions, and train better habits. It is NOT a medical device, a therapist, a counselor, or a crisis service, and nothing in the app should be treated as professional advice.

2. Your data stays on your device

Anchor stores your entries, patterns, and settings locally on this device using the operating system’s standard storage. There is no Anchor server, no account, no remote sync, and no analytics. We never see what you write.

3. AI mode and Anthropic (Claude)

If you enable AI mode and provide your own Anthropic API key, the text you submit (your check-in, your messages, and a short context summary derived from your recent activity) is sent directly from your device to Anthropic’s Claude API for processing. Anthropic’s own terms and privacy policy govern what they do with that data. Anchor is not a party to that relationship and cannot see, log, or control those requests.

4. AI outputs can be wrong

Claude is a language model. It can be confidently incorrect, misread your intent, or generate suggestions that are wrong, unsafe, or simply unhelpful. Treat its replies as a starting point for your own thinking, not as truth, diagnosis, or instruction. Apply your own judgment before acting on anything the app says.

5. Not for crisis or medical situations

If you are in crisis, considering self-harm, or facing a medical or psychological emergency, please contact your local emergency services or a qualified professional or crisis line immediately. Anchor is not designed to detect, respond to, or help with emergencies of any kind.

6. You control your data

You can export a full backup, import a backup, or wipe all local data from the Settings screen at any time. Uninstalling the app removes everything Anchor stored on this device.

7. Your API key, your responsibility

When you enable AI mode you paste an Anthropic API key that belongs to you. Anchor stores it inside Android’s EncryptedSharedPreferences, with the wrapping key generated and held in the Android Keystore (and in StrongBox, the dedicated secure element, when the device supports it). It is excluded from Google’s auto-backup and is never written into exported backup files. That said, no software is perfectly secure, and a rooted, compromised, or physically-accessed device can defeat these protections.

You are solely responsible for keeping that key secret and for any usage and charges incurred against it. In particular:

Anchor takes no responsibility for stolen keys, leaked data, accidental sharing of your backups or entries, or any Anthropic charges, fees, or account actions that result from your use of the key.

8. Age

Anchor is intended for users aged 13 and older (16 and older in the EEA / UK). If you are below the age of majority where you live, you must have the involvement of a parent or guardian, and the app is not a substitute for professional guidance appropriate to your age.

9. Provided “as is” — no warranty, no liability

Anchor is provided to you free of charge, on an “as is” and “as available” basis, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. To the maximum extent allowed by law, the author of Anchor is not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the app, including (without limitation) lost data, leaked data, missed obligations, decisions made based on AI output, third-party (e.g. Anthropic) charges, or any harm to your wellbeing.

10. Acceptance is permanent for this version

By tapping Accept inside the app you confirm that you have read these terms and agree to be bound by them. Acceptance cannot be revoked from inside the app. If the terms are materially updated in a future release you may be asked to accept the new version before continuing; if you do not wish to accept, your option is to stop using the app and uninstall it, which removes all local data.
